What if success doesn’t equal happiness?
Many of us spend our lives pursuing a singular idea of success, one that was created for us by someone else. We give votes to those who shouldn’t even have voices and strive to go faster and faster even as we find ourselves falling further and further behind. We chase gold stars, we check all the boxes, we Lean In – and we still feel incomplete.
This is not a story about failure, but it might as well be. When we don’t define success in our own terms, finding our purpose and carving our own path becomes impossible. How do you break the cycle so that you can be better at work and life?
Over the course of Laura’s 20-year career studying, recruiting, and stewarding leaders through massive career change, she’s witnessed over and over that true success comes from a combination of four elements (calling, connection, contribution, and control) which remove external and internal limits, and empower individuals to carve their own paths and use their work to live their best lives — what she terms Consonance. Simply defined, consonance is when the “what” you do matches the “who” you are (or want to be).
Laura sees the greatness in others and reflects it back on them in ways that help them get unstuck. Because she is turned on by The Big Idea, she encourage’s people to think audaciously, motivating them to dream boldly and then act decisively. Laura is an instigator and a motivator, and she has never met a revolution she didn’t like.
“If all we get in life is what we deserve, we would never get what we demand.” – Laura Gassner Otting
